Title: Cultivating Identity: The Ethnogenesis of the Pawnee People

Abstract: The origins of the Pawnee people in the Central Plains have long been discussed in Great Plains Archaeology. Weaving together Pawnee oral traditions, archaeological information, and new radiocarbon data, I explore the history and utility of Indigenous archaeologies as a systematic and theoretical framework for conducting archaeological practice and why the approach is necessary for interpreting the results of my analyses. Oral traditions belonging to the Arikara and Pawnee Nation’s regarding social change, ethnogenesis, and population movement are presented and evaluated for interpreting the appearance of maize farming and permanent settlement patterns between the 11th and 17th centuries C.E.
