OAS London Speaker Series – April 10 at 7:30 pm

Speaker: Dr. Christopher Kerns RPA, FSA Scot – President of the London Chapter of the OAS

Abstract: In the autumn of 2024, the London Chapter of the OAS undertook a Stage 2 archaeological assessment of the Van Egmond House property. Designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act in 1977 and subject to archaeological excavations by the then Museum of Indian Archaeology (Museum of Ontario Archaeology today) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The archaeological survey conducted by the Chapter was an opportunity to bring together experienced archaeologists and volunteers to explore the nearly two centuries of historical occupation on the site and search for further evidence of the earlier Indigenous occupation. Built in 1846, the Van Egmond house sits in an idyllic setting overlooking the north shore of the Bayfield River. The archaeology uncovered by the survey helps contribute to the story of this property and its historical significance.
