Code of Conduct

Everyone is entitled to a safe and harassment-free environment and experience when participating in events and activities organized by the London Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society (OAS). The London Chapter understands that participation at its events is an important part of career development, and members and leadership affirm the values of respect, equity, multicultural pluralism, and nondiscrimination at these gatherings.

Harassment harms the individual and also damages the London OAS community by discouraging participation in events, and compromising the exchange of ideas central to aims of the OAS. Participants involved in OAS London Chapter activities and events are expected to conform to the principles and provisions of this Code of Conduct and to the OAS Statement of Ethical Principles.

The following behaviors are prohibited at events hosted by the London Chapter of the OAS:

  • Harassment of any kind, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and coercion;
  • Physical or verbal abuse, including bullying;
  • Unwelcome comments and/or exclusionary behaviors related to an individual’s age, sex, gender identity and expression, perceived sexual identity, appearance or body size, military status, ethnicity, individual lifestyle, marital status, sexual orientation, physical or cognitive abilities, political affiliation, race, religion, or nationality; and,
  • Intimidation, stalking, or following.

For clarity, harassment may include, but is not limited to, offensive jokes, slurs, epithets or name calling, unwelcome physical contact, or threats, intimidation, ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, offensive objects or pictures, interference with event performance, or otherwise engaging in conduct that is severe or pervasive enough to be considered harassing, hostile, or abusive. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual misconduct, bullying, intimidation, or retaliation.

Professional argument and disagreement, petty slights, annoyances, and isolated incidents (unless deemed serious) will not rise to the level of violation of this Code of Conduct, although any matter is eligible for Ontario Archaeological Society Complaint Resolution Process.
